Frequently asked questions

Who builds OnTrack PoV?

OnTrack PoV is built by Blaine, working directly with sales engineers and presales teams to shape the product around how evaluations actually run in the field. There's no support queue standing between you and the person who wrote the code — if you have a question about how OnTrack PoV handles your evaluation process, you can reach Blaine directly at sales@ontrackpov.com.

That direct line matters for a self-hosted product. Because OnTrack PoV runs on your own hardware — as a PHP and MySQL application you install and control — setup questions, feature requests, and edge cases get answered by someone who understands both the codebase and the presales workflow it was built for.

Inside the product, the features keep the same names wherever you see them, on this site or inside the tool itself:

  • Test Plan — built from a reusable template library, then exported as a customer-facing document in Word (.docx), PDF, or PowerPoint (.pptx).
  • Update emails — status updates generated straight from your tracked pass/fail results, so stakeholders see progress without a manual write-up.
  • Closeout briefing — the generated document that wraps an evaluation with its recorded outcome, ready to hand to the customer or file for the win/loss record.

If you're evaluating OnTrack PoV itself, that consistency is deliberate: the same names you read on this FAQ are the ones you'll click on inside the product, so nothing gets lost in translation between what we say and what you use.

Straight answers about tracking Proof of Value and Proof of Concept evaluations—and about OnTrack.

What is OnTrack?

OnTrack is software for tracking Proof of Value (PoV) and Proof of Concept (POC) evaluations. It gives sales engineers and presales teams one place to plan a test plan, track every functional test as pass or fail, manage stakeholders and success criteria, and generate customer-facing Test Plans, update emails, and closeout briefings.

Who is OnTrack for?

OnTrack is built for sales engineers, presales teams, and technology vendors who run product evaluations as part of the sales cycle—plus the presales leaders who need to report across every active PoV or POC.

What is the difference between a PoV and a POC?

A Proof of Concept (POC) proves a product can work technically and is measured with functional pass/fail criteria for IT and engineering audiences. A Proof of Value (PoV) proves the product delivers business value and ROI and is measured with business outcomes for economic buyers. POCs run mid-funnel to clear technical risk; PoVs run late-funnel to justify the spend. Read the full guide →

How does OnTrack track an evaluation?

OnTrack tracks each evaluation through four stages: plan a test plan from a reusable template library, launch it into per-evaluation working tables, track every functional test as pass or fail with notes and screenshots, then report and close out with generated documents and a recorded win/loss outcome. See how it works →

Is OnTrack self-hosted?

Yes. OnTrack is a self-hosted PHP and MySQL application that runs on your own hardware, hosted wherever you choose, so your evaluation data never leaves your infrastructure.

Does OnTrack charge a subscription or per-seat fee?

No. OnTrack has no subscription fees and no per-seat licensing. You own it outright and can add unlimited users.

What documents can OnTrack generate?

OnTrack generates customer-facing Test Plans, status update emails, and closeout briefings, and exports them as Word (.docx), PDF, and PowerPoint (.pptx).

Why do POCs and PoVs fail, and how does OnTrack help?

Most evaluations fail on process, not technology: unclear scope, no agreed success criteria, scope creep, and weak stakeholder engagement. OnTrack helps by standardizing test plans and success criteria, tracking pass/fail results against them, and keeping stakeholders and status updates visible from kickoff to closeout.
